Introduction 

People of all ages are affected by constipation. It is a condition in which you are unable to completely empty your stomach. Constipation appears when you are not passing stools regularly.

Your stools become hard and lumpy due to constipation, they may be large or small. Condition during constipation varies from person to person. Most of the people experience constipation for only a short period of time. But, for others it may be a long lasting condition. In some cases, it becomes a chronic condition associated with pain and affects daily activities.

Causes of constipation

Identification of real causes of constipation is often difficult. However, number of factors are contributor to the condition: They are:

  • If you diet don’t have enough fiber like vegetables, cereals and fruit.
  • A sudden change in routine or lifestyle
  • Change in eating habits and diet
  • Ignorance for stools
  • Side effects associated with some medicines
  • If your diet is deprived of fluid
  • Depression and anxiety

In children it is mostly caused due to poor diet and fear regarding using toilet.

Who is affected by constipation?

Constipation can occur in adults, children and even in babies. According to one survey every seventh human being in UK is suffering wit constipation, and every third individual must have experienced constipation at one time in their life.

The condition is even more severe in women then in men and is also common during pregnancy.

Treatment of Constipation

The first thing your GP will advise is to change your life style, diet and habit of eating.

The next step is to increase diet which contains fiber, always make sure that you have intake plenty of fluid, and always try to get something different like do exercise regularly.

In case, you are not getting rid of constipation then your GP will prescribe oral laxatives in the form of medicines, which help you in emptying your bowel.

The regular treatment for constipation is effective, but time limit may exceed from few days to several months.

Preventing constipation

If you follow all the above mention prescriptions or visit your GP regularly then you are likely to get rid of constipation at the first place.

Following guidelines properly you will get enough time to pass stools comfortably. Always make sure that you are not ignoring the urge to go to toilet regularly.

Complications

Mostly, constipation is not associated with any complication, but if you have long term constipation then you may develop:

  • Piles ( haemorrhoids)
  • When hard or dry stool stuck in rectum then faecal impaction may occur
  • Bowel Incontinence characterized by leakage of liquid stools.
