Quick and Easy Dry Skin Remedies

Not all people are blessed with soft, supple skin. Dry skin patches is one common condition which plagues individuals. There are many causes for dry skin. In some cases, the body is unable to produce enough oil to moisturize the skin because of age or a deficiency in nutrients. Underlying conditions such as psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis can cause the skin to produce large dry patches of skin. The use and abuse of certain skin products or prolonged exposure to the sun can also lead to skin drying. There are several dry skin remedies available. Read on to learn more about some of the more prevalent treatment options. Before using any particular treatment, individuals are advised to consult with a dermatologist to ensure that the skin will respond well to the treatment or remedy selected.

For Medicinal Dry Skin Remedies – Select one of these

A number of lotions, exfoliators and moisturizers are readily available for purchase over-the-counter. There are different types of products made for different symptoms. Moisturizers are designed to add moisture to the skin. Emollients such as lanolin and mineral oil help soften the skin while humectants such as sesame oil, glycerin and olive oil are good for keeping the water on the skin.

Shielding lotions are new in the market. These do not add moisture but are effective in protecting the skin from losing any remaining moisture. Compared to regular types of lotion, these do not rub off easily and provide a better protection against the elements.

There are also products which contain stronger medication and chemicals. These are used for severe conditions of dry skin such as eczema. Some are available over-the-counter while others require a doctor’s prescription. Products which contain humectants such as alpha hydroxyl acids, urea and lactate fall under this category.

Natural Remedies

Individuals that do not respond well to prescription or over-the-counter medication should try more natural means of treatment. These are cheaper and safer to use. Care should still be taken as some allergies may develop with using certain substances.

A wide variety of fruits, vegetables and herbs are great in moisturizing the skin. One technique to try is mixing an egg yolk with a teaspoon each of olive oil and orange juice. Add a few drops of rose water and lime juice into the concoction. Mix the ingredients together and apply on the skin approximately 15 minutes before going to the showers. One of the simplest dry skin remedies involves a ripe banana. Mash one piece and apply on the skin. Allow the skin to absorb the nutrients by leaving it on for a few minutes then wash it off using lukewarm water. Some may add other moisturizing ingredients such as sour cream, egg yolk or honey to the mix to make it more effective.  Mashing an avocado also works in the same way. Add a few droplets of fresh lime juice to the mashed avocado. Mix the paste together and apply on the skin. The paste can be applied all over the body. Leave the paste on for at least 15 minutes before washing it off with warm water.

Other Helpful Tips

The key is to retain as much moisture. A simple diet change can help. Drink lots of clean water to keep it hydrated. Eat foods rich in good fatty acids such as omega-3. These include foods such as salmon, walnuts and flax.

Avoid taking long hot showers as it strips the skin of oils. This can actually remove the skin’s protective oils. Do not use harsh soaps or cleansers while bathing. Instead, use shower gels that contain moisturizers. Apply moisturizers after taking a bath. The application should be done around three minutes after taking a bath to lock in the moisture. Also remember to wear sunscreen when going outside
