Research suggest that Calorie Restriction Reduce the risk of Acquiring Breast Cancer

Calorie intake can make one person fat if they eat too much and don’t intend to burn it off with exercise. Some restrict calories from their diet to prevent them from gaining weight and having another layer of belly flap. However, according to recent studies published in Frontier Physiology, calorie restriction can help to lower down the risk and prevent one person from acquiring chronic diseases such as breast cancer.
An anticancer effect of calorie restriction has been found in human and animals suffering from an eating disorder called anorexia nervosa. This has been reported by R. Pallavi and his colleagues from European Institute of Oncology Milan, Italy as they reviewed other studies that provide a strong link between calorie restriction and cancer.
Anorexia nervosa is an eating disorder that starts during adolescence and early adulthood wherein a person is suffering from fear of gaining weight thus restricting their food and calorie intake. This is mostly found among females approaching puberty and this has been linked to their self esteem.
Researchers from the team of Karin B. Michels, ScD found out that these women who were treated for anorexia nervosa in the early stage were proven to have lower risk for acquiring breast cancer – these findings were reported in the Journal of American Medical Association. The samples for the study conducted were drawn from 7303 Swedish women who were hospitalized before they reached 40 years old due t o anorexia nervosa. They found out that compared to the general population; these women who were treated for anorexia were less likely to develop lethal breast cancer by almost 53 percent.
Normal cells are dependent on the ATP’s or adenosine Triphosphate which is a product from glycolysis – the conversion of glucose into pyruvate and the process wherein free energy is released. However, cancer cells are more dependent on glycolysis so they can strive and reproduce. On the other hand, glycolysis also produces lactic acid which makes cancer patients feel tired and fatigue.
The researchers explained that calorie restriction involves a lot of mechanisms that leads to the protection against cancer cells. This includes lowering the circulating level of insulin and insulin-like growth factors I and II, increases DNA repair, alters cell cycle regulation, lowers the rate of cellular proliferation and epidermal growth factor which decreases and slows down cancer cell growth; it also enhances the expression of tumor suppressor genes which helps suppress the cancer cells thus preventing further damage.
Cancers caused by various carcinogens can be inhibited through proper diet and exercise and when proper diet is mentioned, this includes calorie restriction so as to cut the food source of the cancer cells. When these cells don’t find food to feed on their metastasis or spread to other tissues and organs will slow down.
Although calorie restriction may help a lot in reducing the breast cancer risk, it is important that you bear in mind that early detection is as important as prevention and therefore diagnostic procedures such as mammogram should be done annually and breast self examination should also be done.
